There’s a new app in town that literally brings people together. It’s called Mosaic and is appropriately named. This app allows you to make a mosaic of your iPhones and iPads. You can create one giant screen on which you can share files or view photos or even watch videos. The Mosaic app syncs multiple devices. With just one swipe, all your devices are connected.
The idea started when 3 college students who are based in Cambridge, Mass. simply wanted a way to physically connect their mobile devices. One was already working on Swyp, a file-transfer interface so the three decided to combine its technology with what’s known as “screen-stitching”. All the founders have been developing and programming for Apple’s iOS from an early age so it is no surprise that they would come up with this app. They created Mosaic during PennApps which is the world’s largest college hackathon. The app was launched in April.
According to co-founder Zain Shah, they tried to make an interface that was as intuitive as you would expect something like the app to be. He said that mobile phones tend to separate people physically. With Mosaic, people can collaborate with their devices and enjoy them together.
In the meantime, the team still needs to finish school. Shah is taking up computer science and neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh and artificial intelligence and computational-neuroscience research at Carnegie Mellon. On the other hand, co-founders Alex List and Ishaan Gulrajani are both studying computer science at MIT.
Good news for developers
Probably the best news for developers is Mosaic’s open software development kit. The team hopes that this move will spur developers to integrate the app into their own products to create their own original applications.
This app will clearly be attractive to the gaming community. Imagine what game developers will be able to come up with, with this app. It will encourage novel interactions. For example, developers can create a board game that spans multiple devices. A video game can also be developed in which one player sets up the structure and another moves the characters. Each player can do this in their own phones. The app lends itself best to small companies that could base an entire product around this technology.
This app will be a fun and interesting ingredient to a party. Users can play games, watch movies, etc. It can also be used for unique presentations. If you have a unique product, use this app and stitch together your team’s mobile devices for a one-of-kind presentation. Wow your clients with the Mosaic app.
